How to (un)become

How to (un)become is dedicated to the workshop “the sky above our heads” organised by pink house press (Ersi & Gijs) and Nico Dockx, in late October 2021. We demolished the former studio of the sculptor artist Jean-Paul Laenen, a building he built himself in the garden of his house in Mechelen. A beautiful structure made of wood and glass, leaning against an old beguinage wall. We discovered how it was built, by dismantling it piece by piece, documenting the process. Our material: drawings, pictures, videos, memories, experiences, will form the compost to rebuild at some point in the future. It was a wonderful week, hosted by his family Sylvie Laenen & Nina Janssen. With thanks to Nico Dockx, and the great ‘guerilla deconstruction team’ -> Philip Angermaier, Jackson Shallcross-Platt, Jeannette Slütter, Rien Schellemans, Yi Zhang, Xiaotong and us, Ersi Varveri and Gijs Waterschoot.

how to become… series was initiated by Ersi Varveri as part of the research project ‘one space becoming another’ (2020-2022) connected to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp.
With this newspaper I want to share material from the ongoing research and to explore the idea of a portable space in a printed form!
